Dragon King Legacy

Venturing forth.....and back again
Log 45

The group followed the discovered corridor find a series of doors which they marked for later inspection and came upon a massive room with what they thought was a Dragon trapped in a pool of glass, after exporing a bit and finding another puzzle which they could not figure out, they approached the big doors on the other side of the chamber.

They led to a room with a statue which asked them, 'What does it mean to be good' the group answered with a variety of responses which opened a secret door with stairs leading up.

They came to a ledge which used to have a rope bridge spanning a vast pit of which the depth was tested and they knew climbing down and up again would be bad, with that the group rested.

Returning to the ledge Beorn cast Stone Shape  and made a fancy bridge made of stone bears and walked upon it. As they reached the other side they were attacked by some bestial looking creatures which did not last long from a casually thrown Fireball from Lyari.

Traversing the new set of stairs the group found another ledge, while the group were examining this they heard squeaking, they turned to find Beorn had turned into a Gnome, Lyari realised the area was covered in an anti-magic field, disabled somewhere else perhaps or would they need to use mundane means? Whatever the case was, the group backtracked to close up odds and ends they had found on the way to this point.

Doors were explored, fountains purged of Black Puddings and rooms were looted of some valuable things.

Where upon they found a small pit with runes inscribed around the opening, everyone averted their eyes, except for Taklinn which spoke the runes aloud against his will, they was a pop and a huge frost elemental emerged. It thanked Taklinn and preceded to attack them!

The group decided to check the various places the Xorn had told them about, finding and restoring a Deva, a book telling a story for Danar's time and a room full of bones with a dead werewolf in the middle of it.

With that they then went and took the other door from the chapel, finding an area full of pretty lights that amazed everyone until Taklinn dispelled the effect. Backtracking they went up some stair and entered a room with 8 statues of various people and monsters, they quickly deduced this was a puzzle as the doors on the other side of the room could not be reached.

After about 20 minutes the group figured out the story was linked to the statues and were able to figure out the answer which allowed them to continue. The next room held some spectres which fled as soon as Taklinn raised his symbol.

Khaine searched the room finding and opening the secret door, what lay beyond?

The group gave the electrical trap a wide berth and determined the door opposite them was open, moving inside they were confronted with a Xorn demanding materials for it to eat, after a bit of diplomacy the group exchange the location of a trove of minerals with some gold for what was around them, a few rooms of interest, others with hazards and the dark energy mist with 2 Slaad and very valuable treasure!

The group decided to lay an ambush for the Slaad and draw them in, while the ambush went off as the expected Lyari forgot some details of one of the Slaad which ambushed them! The fight was very one sided as the ambushing Slaad missed it's surprise attack and went downhill from there especially when Taklinn missed his touch spell on it and ended up with his hand up its nose.

With the Slaad taken care of the group navigated the mist with some failure and success, half of them were blind and Beorn found the treasure and covered it in his bear slobber which Lyari complained about, still there were some really nice magic items in the small pile they had.

The group then wondered what to do next…..

Checking out the sound, they found a human chained to the wall, after a bit of discussion, it turned out this was the original Dench and the body in the bag was an imposter! (No wonder he was so bad at finding traps)

Dench was a nickname he kept for 'business' his actual name was Khaine and he had teleported into the Banewarrens only to be captured by a Lich, he observed that the Lich acted strangely in the southern part of the room, to which the group had a look and gestured Khaine see if there were any traps.

Ironically he did find one which almost killed him, Taklinn had enough sense to pull him out of the crushing rock pillar before he became paste. The group backtracked and checked out the remaining doors in the previous rooms finding a blackened room and something worse.

A huge area was covered in a dark energy mist where the fabric of reality wore thin, Lyari scouted ahead using a spell of Invisibility and found a pit in the middle as if a massive explosion had occurred here. He saw a Blue Slaad climb up from the pit and look around, Lyari then backtracked and met the others to explain what he had found before the group rested.

The next day, the group returned to where Khaine had been held and proceeded up the narrow corridor to the Lich, unfortunately with Khaine scouting ahead and informing them the Lich had prepared an ambush, the group decided to plan how to attack it and the Lich heard them and hit them all with a Lightning Bolt, however the Lich's glee was short lived as Taklinn briefly lit the Lich up with Searing Light and when the light faded, all that was left was a pile of ash.

Searching the room and ash pile revealed a few items which were stowed and they continued down the corridor, they could sense a magical presence nearby and found a trap which snowed green dust. The dust was paralyzing to all it touched, so Lyari used Ice Wall to stop the dust and Khaine, after a few minutes disabled the trap. The magical effect turned out to be a malfunctioning trap which shot electricity along the corridor, Lyari consider what to do with it, should they continue this way or look around?

The man smiled as he dished out unholy blasphemy calling the gods the party worshiped all sorts of weird and distasteful names while the wights rushed in the engage the party.

At first the party managed to vanquish the wights only for the man to shout 'MORE!' and more wights appeared. After about a minute of hard fighting, they finally dispatched the wights and the unholy man turned into mist and flew south into a corridor, seeping in and out of the cracks on the side of the wide corridor. Lyari examined the corridor only to annouce to the group there were three traps present, the first did electrical damage, the second stun and the third was a teleporter, where to he did not want to find out.

Beorn used a summoned bear to get past the traps, then Lyari used a spell to swap the places of the bear and Ragnar, which lay siege to the room, diminishing the unholy mans presence, but not ridding it entirely as he had no idea how to.

Returning to the chapel (finding out the teleporter led to the electrical trap directly) the room checked the door the wights came from and found a huge pile of skulls and a series of doors.

The doors were tried but none could be opened, Ragnar shoulder changed one door only for the door behind them slam shut, Beorn reasoned that only one door could be open in this room.

After some empty rooms, they came to a room which was the entrance to the converted prison area, where banes had been set loose and good beings had been tortured, held and worse.

The group also fancied they could hear something down the corridor in the prison………

The Air elemental suddenly weakened and the group were able to rain blows down upon it and it blew out.

The group healed up and proceeded to the secret door Taklinn found during the fight, after a while they came to a room with silver runes inlayed around the doorways, it was otherwise clear, the room radiated magic though, Dench the pointman stuck his hand in, only to see it steam and sizzle, Ragnar walked into the room and onto the other side with no ill effects.

Not to be put out Dench kept his composure and said, 'I'll handle this', took a few steps back and sprinted across the gap…..as he cleared the first sets of rooms, his skin blackened and his wounds reopened. At the second set of runes, there was a mightly CRUNCH that everyone heard and to their shock Dencj keeled over…dead. Ragnar examined him, evidently Dench had found something which his body could not overcome.

Eventually the group discovered the room was affected by a Forbiddance spell and there was a password to bypass it, if only Dench had waited they thought…..

In the next room a Man appeared before them imploring them to go no further and to turn back lest they released what was kept within, before anyone could ask anything, the man faded.

The group knew to seal the Banewarrens for good, they needed the third piece of the staff and the sealing rod, both were within the deeper parts of the warrens.

They opened the door with the key, immediately they could all feel the evil seeped into the area beyond. Nonetheless they proceeded on taking a left at the stairs finding a room bare with a few turned over tables and a series of doors. From what knowledge they knew there was a chapel and a series of little vaults, there was also some nasty traps down here and with there pointman preserve in one of their bags of holding it would be wise to go carefully.

The door they picked led to the Chapel which from what they could see had been corrupted, a Man by the split altar turned and smiled at them and called for guards which turned out to be armed Wights. Taklinn stepped forth to turn them and the Wights cackled at his attempt, the Man spoke unholy words and shook Taklinn's faith in his god, the group rushed in to purge the evil….

The group found beyond the airlock a chain and a secret door, expecting one to open the other, Kalam pulled it down they head a series of clanks and a slow grinding in the distance and the secret door did not open.

The group then access the secret door which led to a small tunnel, Beorn & Grills in bear form played in the water tank, eating the remaining fish while the rest investigated.

They came to the other end and found a small room with a door, Dench being the pointman did not find any traps but upon opening the door he did find four Gorillons looking as shocked as he was!

The fight was brief and the group won with minor injuries, and the proceeded to look around to see what the chain had done.

They found a secret door had opened up to an area they had not seen before with doors and a screen depicting a cloudy scene, upon stepping into the room, a huge air elemental appear and starting tossing the group around and dealing serious damage to them, the group damaged it back with what they had, at one point Kalam threw his sword at it, such was his frustration that his damage was having little impact upon it. Would the group be able to defeat the elemental?

Traps? What Traps?

The group continued up the stairs and found another trap mostly by Dench walking into it and came to a series of rooms which were checked out at length, one had a Vault door and another was full of snoring Gorillions which was entertaining to watch Taklinn sneak past them while Dench tried to pick their pockets (or lack of them).

Anyhow the group eventually opened the vault door since it was not in Geri's information and Dench gave the all clear and promptly got zapped as as he touched the floor. The group started giving Beorn the evil for hiring a Rogue that could not find these traps before he stepped on them, at some point Dench would step on something that he would not walk away so easily from.

However in highlighting said trap Kalam noticed the ceiling was just a wall of darkness and with a boost and a rummage around the ceiling he triggered a secret door to open.

Wandering in they found an airlock, the group made ready for what was on the otherside, fortunately the other side was a water tank that had been drained, Lyari opened the door on the otherside and made to use that airlock to see what else there was….

The group bought a few things before attending the church to see what they had been up to, it turned out the Church had discovered these Banewarrens had something of value to them and had put  together a team to this end and informed the group that they would be venturing forth down there and might lend them aid if they were to do so in kind. The group had mixed feeling with a second group in there with them and decided to visit the Inverted Pyramid before getting into the Banewarrens before the Lothians did!

The trip was worth it as Geri had told the guild a lot of things which was passed on, with information in hand they proceeded in.

Initial entry was easy and nothing had changed until they found the floor wet, fearing something had been set loose they tracked back the water to its source, two giant octopi and a werewolf lay in a partially flooded room they had been in, looking at the werewolf brought back memories of house Vlaadaam, were they here as well? No sign of them they could see so they continued on, bypassing a barrier with the information gain from the guild and proceeded onwards, at each door they looked at the information given to them which told of what was behind each one. Dench was tempted to open them but the presence of a Paladin stayed his hand….for now anyway.

They came to a room, the information they had said there was guardian in this room but it did not say what it was. Dench confident of locating traps took the lead and made up the steps leading to the next area. As soon as he took one step, a ball of light appeared and zapped him with a bolt of lightning! Dench;s hair stood on end and with such speed that the group was unaware of, he jumped off the stairs and rolled under them.

Aside from this the Ball of light was popped soon after wards and Dench came out, cockiness gone for good? We'll see next time.

The Terror that was Beorn....

Lyari started firing off various spells at the Yuan-ti and Hydra only for some to bounce off he then noticed at the corner of his eye a tree nearby to the rest of the group moved and turned into a Kielder with Mungo! They charged in firing what weapons they possessed, doing slight amounts of damage to the Harpy.

At this point the Harpy entered the dome and fired upon the group dealing some heavy injuries mostly to Grills all was going to plan until the group reacted and launched attacks against it before it could rise again, they did some good damage and then Beorn came around to take a bite out of it, Beorn found he was going too fast and tried to slow down, unfortunately he forgot how to slow down and in his panic, he turned his Wild Shape off.

The result was a hairy ballistic gnome hitting the Harpy at speed, the Harpy was completely bewildered which rendered it a sitting duck for Mungo and Kielder, finishing off what Beorn had achieved.

Beorn turned back into a Bat just as the rest of the monsters hit them. Arrows, spells and flash of blades was all anyone saw as it just was chaos, Boern summoned in a mass of bears and the group took down the Hydra in short order.

The Yuan-ti wasn't going down without taking some of them with her and Mungo with Wolfdan fell to her blades, Dench got a cut in a sensitive spot only to watch the snake woman cast Flaming Corrosion and several summoned bears turn into goo which made him back off.

However the group won out due to sheer weight in numbers and the battle was won, hard fought but they were the victors.

With that and saying some words for those departed, they headed back to the manor to rest and ransack what remained.

The following day they returned through the portal and proceeded to head to the market to sell their loot and consider their next course of action, they had a Beholder to kill, the Church was up to something and the Inverted Pyramid has presumably the answers by now from Geri.

What would they do next?
